The Vagabond King is a 1956 film and musical. It is based on the 1925 operetta of the same name by Rudolf Frimi, which in turn is based on the 1901 romantic play If I Were King, by Justin McCarthy. The concept of the play is a cross between Robin Hood and The Prince and the Pauper, just with a lot more singing and much less political commentary. The film stars Francois Villon (Oreste Kirkop) as the leader of the Vagabonds, a Robin Hood-like group that opposes and mocks the king, and redistributes money from the rich to the poor through theft. King Louis XI (Walter Hampden) condemns Villon to death by hanging in the year 1461, but then cancels his sentence when he realizes that Villon is more popular than he, and could be very useful in rallying the people to defeat the invading Burgundians. Villon finds himself in a very different role as he leads the people against the invaders and secures the king's court from internal traitors.moreless
