The Vampire Lovers is the cult 1970 horror thriller from edgy, Gothic horror filmmaking factory Hammer Films and experienced Hammer director Roy Ward Baker (Five Million Years to Earth, A Night to Remember), adapted loosely from the story Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu. On an isolated area in Germany, a rash of murders amidst villagers bring back the ancient rumors of vampires, especially when Laura (Pippa Steel), the niece of the General Von Spielsdorf (Peter Cushing), falls sick to the strange disease that is killing the villagers. Marcilla (Ingrid Pitt), the daughter of a Countess, is living with the General's family as a house guest, and does everything she can to comfort Laura, but sadly, the young girl dies. Weeks later, the disease returns to the region, this time affecting Emma Morton (Madeline Smith), the daughter of a British nobleman (George Cole) who doesn't believe in vampires. However, Emma has a friend that looks after her, a young woman named Carmilla, that bears more than a slight resemblance to the disappeared Marcilla.moreless
