The Vanishing American is based on a novel by Zane Grey. In Monument Valley, Arizona, a Navaho tribe lives on a reservation and is looked after by a man named Booker (Noah Beery), who hates the indians. Booker makes sure that his men get the best horses and supplies so the Indians only get the leftovers. Nophanie (Richard Dix) complains about Booker's bad treatment to his superiors, but they do nothing. When World War I breaks out, the U.S. Army turns to the reservation for fresh horses for the Cavalry. While Booker objects to the army, a kindly teacher who has taken Nophanie under his wing, explains to him that things will be better after the war and that the world will change for the good if the right side wins. Believing this, Nophanie enlists, brings good horses for the effort and gets others to join in the war where the Indian soldiers fight with honor. When Nophanie returns home, he finds his tribe in very bad shape. When the others from the tribe wish to get revenge on the white man, it's up to Nophanie to make the choice whether to attack or make peace.moreless
