The Vicious Kind is a 2009 comedic drama directed by Lee Toland Krieger. Caleb Sinclaire (Adam Scott) has let himself become isolated and jaded. Due to his own romantic failures, Caleb decides to direct his anger at women, adopting an acerbic wit and misogynistic attitude. One Thanksgiving weekend, Caleb is forced to interact with his family for the first time in a while. He picks up his conservative, easygoing brother, Peter (Alex Frost), from college and drives him home for the holiday. Unexpectedly, Peter is also bringing along his beautiful new girlfriend, Emma (Brittany Snow). Caleb makes the ride unusually unpleasant for his little brother and Emma, sharing his bleak views on dating and women in general. Despite his anger, however, it is clear that Caleb is developing reluctant feelings for Emma. When the trio arrives at home and Caleb has to face his estranged father, Donald (J.K. Simmons), the tensions rise to a fevered pitch and make the holiday weekend awkward and difficult for everyone.

Before it bogs down in one too many moments of cathartic reckoning, The Vicious Kind is an unpredictable, off-kilter and scabrously funny piece of work.
