The Wackness is a 2008 film about teenager Luke Shapiro (Josh Peck), who lives in New York and trades pot in exchange from therapy from his psychiatrist Dr. Jeffrey Squires (Ben Kingsley), whose stepdaughter Stephanie (Olivia Thirlby) is the object of Luke’s affection. Its the summer after he has graduated from high school, and his parents are broke and fighting, so he begins selling pot to make money for his family. He and Stephanie are the only people they know still in town for the summer, so she agrees to hang out with them. Luke and Dr. Squires have a rather unconventional relationship and one of their nights hanging out lands them in jail. Steph bails them out and spends more time with Luke despite her father’s opposition. She takes him to her family’s house on Fire Island while her father and his wife (Famke Janssen) work on their relationship. She learns that Luke is a virgin and offers to give him “sex lessons,â€? and afterwards, he says he loves her, though she is clearly not looking for the same kind of relationship that he is. When they get back, Luke’s family is evicted and moves in to a hotel, and when he goes to visit Stephanie, she answers the door with another guy. He goes to Fire Island, where Dr. Squire is on a bender influenced by his pending divorce, and ends up turning the tables when he counsels the doctor out of suicide, helping himself come to a few realizations in the process.moreless
