The War Game is a 1965 Academy winning docu-drama written and directed by Peter Watkins. This fictionalized documentary explores the effects of a nuclear attack on a typical city in the United Kingdom. The film proposes a hypothetical scenario in which a Chinese invasion of South Vietnam triggers an escalating series of events leading to a NATO/Warsaw Pact conflict in Europe. Through interviews and on-location acting the film explores the physiological and social effects of nuclear war. The film raises serious questions about how well prepared civil authorities are for nuclear attack. British civil authorities argued that a nuclear attack would be survivable, like the 'blitz.' The War Game depicts a more frightening scenario where society falls into anarchy following nuclear war. Originally produced as an one hour documentary for the BBC, the film proved too violent and shocking for broadcast in the mid-1960s. It was then put into theatrical release where it went on to win best documentary at the 1965 Academy Awards.moreless
