The War is a 1994 film about a family struggling to make ends meet in 1970's Mississippi. Stephen Simmons (Kevin Costner) is a Vietnam veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress, who has just returned from voluntary treatment at a mental hospital. Stephen struggles with finding a job, forcing him to rely on his wife Lois (Mare Winningham), who holds a steady job. Despite Stephen's return from Vietnam and the hospital, the idea of war continues to trouble the family as Stephen's twin children Stu (Elijah Wood) and Lidia (Lexi Randall) come into conflict with neighborhood children after constructing a complex tree house. A "war" between the children begins when the boys from a local, poverty-stricken family demand access to the tree house, and when turned away, seize control of it by force. But when tragedy strikes the Simmons family, the resulting emotions escalate the childish war into a true battle, one with life and death consequences.
