The Wave, known in Germany as Die Welle, is a 2008 dramatic thriller written and directed by German filmmaker Dennis Gansel and is based on the novel written by Todd Strasser. It centers around a bizzare school project that quickly transforms into a powerful political experiment with unpredictable consequences. Rainer Wenger (Jürgen Vogel) is a high school teacher who is unhappy about his assignment for the school project week. He is asked to conduct an experiment that would illustrate how an autocracy works and how an iron fist rule can change the society. Although he is reluctant at first, he is surprised about the project's popularity among the students. Wenger soon realizes that his innocent political experiment created a cohesive social structure that is able to govern itself without any external influence. The enthusiastic students refuse to abandon the idea, and the teachers soon realize that the experiment is a horrific reminder of Germany's past totalitarian regime.
