The Wedding Planner is a 2001 American romantic comedy film by director Adam Shankman, starring Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey. Maria 'Mary' Fiore (Jennifer Lopez) is a San Francisco wedding planner whose lack of luck in love leaves her sadly single'until the handsome, suave Dr. Steve Edison (Matthew McConaughey) saves her from an unfortunate accident. The pair immediately hit it off and meet up later to frolick in the park, watch an old movie under the stars, and dance in the rain. Everything is as romantic as can be and Mary finally lets herself lower her guard'this man might really be The One. That is, until she finds out that Edison is not only engaged, but she is planning his wedding! Mary is, of course, less than thrilled to cary on planning the wedding, but she cannot turn it down. Edison's fianc', Fran Donolly (Bridgette Wilson) is her biggest client and Mary cannot afford to lose the job. But when things start to get even shakier in Fran and Edison's relationship, while sparks continue to fly between Ediosn and Mary, all bets are off. The Wedding Planner was a commercial success, making Jennifer Lopez the first performer to have a film and an album at #1 in the same week.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 60

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

The picture is never less than pleasant -- but it's not more than that often enough.

  • 30

The New York Times Dana Stevens

It's like watching two superbly conditioned rowers try to race a boat made of folded newspaper. Hard as they work, they just can't make it go any faster.

  • 30

    Variety Robert Koehler

This tale of mismatched lovebirds begins with considerable charm but eventually loses its winning ways with an excess of ridiculous elements.
