The Weekend is a 1999 independent drama written and directed by Brian Skeet and based on a novel by Peter Cameron. The film stars Deborah Kara Unger, Gena Rowlands, Brooke Shields, Gary Dourdan, D.B. Sweeney, Jared Harris, and David Conrad. Past relationships intrude on the present when Marian (Deborah Kara Unger) and John Kerr (Jared Harris) invite a group of old friends to visit them for a weekend at their gorgeous upstate New York home. The visitors include Lyle (David Conrad), a homosexual art critic and a former lover of John's handsome and charismatic half-brother Tony (D.B. Sweeney), who died of AIDS exactly one year earlier, and Lyle's new boyfriend, a talented young aspiring artist named Robert (James Duval). At the Kerr's neighbors' home, Laura Ponti (Gena Rowlands), who is a widowed free-spirit, is surprised when she gets a visit from her angry daughter Nina (Brooke Shields), and Nina's current lover Thierry (Gary Dourdan), who is married to another woman. Emotions erupt when Laura, Nina, and Thierry join the Kerr household for dinner.moreless

Intelligent and holds your attention, like a mystery story unraveling.

Despite some memorable high points, pic plays like "Love! Valour! Compassion!" -- without the laughs.

The New York Times Stephen Holden

You have to admire the effort its attractive cast expends pumping life into stilted, flowery dialogue that confuses pretentious attitudinizing with profound insight.
