The Well is a 1951 dramatic mystery directed by Leo C. Popkin and Russell Rouse. The film is set in a racially mixed town and focuses on the disappearance of a young black girl and the racial tensions that rise when a white man is accused of abducting her. In the film, 5-year-old Carolyn Crawford (Gwendolyn Laster) disappears on her way to school. Her parents reach out to Sheriff Ben Kellogg (Richard Rover) who hears a rumor that she was last seen with a mysterious white man. The white man turns out to be Claude Packard (Harry Morgan), who claims he is in town to visit his uncle. His uncle uses his influence to get him released from custody, which sets off more angry townspeople. When the town catches wind of the rumors, tensions quickly rise out of control. Can the town regain their focus in time to find the missing girl, or will the town's racial tension hinder her being found alive?moreless
