The Whales of August is a 1987 drama about two elderly sisters, Libby (Bette Davis) and Sarah (Lillian Gish). Both of them are now widows and have chosen to spend the end of their lives together, trying to care for each other and keep each other's spirits up. Libby has become increasingly infirm and weak, losing her vision and starting to lose her grip on reality as well. When she is alert, Libby can be cold and dismissive towards Sarah, who desperately wants to be close to her sister. As the two try to make amends, their small Maine summer home receives a string of visitors. Tisha Doughty (Ann Sothern) used to be the sisters' best friend, and when she visits the three women reminisce about days past. Mr. Maranov (Vincent Price) finds Sarah's beauty and kindness very attractive, although she is not quite ready to accept any suitors after the death of her husband. As Sarah and Libby think back over the past decades, they unearth the memories that shape their current relationship.
