The Wind That Shakes the Barley is a 2006 Irish history drama directed by Ken Loach which presents the emotional and controversial aspects of brotherhood between rebellious men during the Irish War of Independence and the Civil War. Damien O'Sullivan (Cillian Murphy) is an aspiring Irish doctor who is about to embark on a trip to London to work in a hospital. When he witnesses the cruelty and the crimes of Black and Tan squads, who have the mission of suppressing the rebels who fight for Ireland's independence, Damien decides to stay in his home country and join his brother Teddy (Padraic Delaney) and his fellow soldiers. Teddy is the leader of a high-mobility brigade of the Irish Republican Army that consists of volunteers who are eager to sacrifice everything for Ireland's independence. The war between the rebels and the British forces create a strong bond between the men of the brigade. When a cease-fire is announced and a treaty is signed, the men's opinion about continuing the fighting is divided. As the Civil War breaks out, brothers Damien and Teddy find themselves on the opposite sides of the battle.moreless
