The Wishing Tree tells the story of Clara Collier (Alfre Woodard), a disillusioned lawyer who returns to her hometown of Savannah, Georgia to bury her mother Mattie, a renowned local storyteller. Mattie has kept the Deep South tradition of storytelling alive, and on her death her friends and family gather to reminisce and tell stories themselves. Clara finds herself entranced by the story of The Magic Man, a local legend related by her mother's closest friends. According to lore, The Magic Man (Blair Underwood) is a handsome, mysterious stranger who finds people lost in the nearby woods and safely guides them home. Deciding to investigate the story, even though she is dubious about it's veracity, Clara soon stumbles across deeply buried family secrets and is terrified by what she learns. The Wishing Tree is a languid, easy look at the Deep South and it's tradition of storytelling that will leave you on the edge of your seat and anxious to know the story's end. Director Ivan Passer has crafted a fine suspense film that deserves to be seen.moreless
