1984
Rating:
PG-13
The Woman in Red is a 1984 comedy about infidelity based on the French farce, "Pardon Mon Affaire." Middle-aged Teddy Pierce (Gene Wilder) has a successful career and a long, happy marriage to Didi (Judith Ivey). His life falls into disarray once a beautiful, young model, Charlotte (Kelly Le Brock), and her red dress catches his eye on a San Francisco street. More than momentarily impressed, Teddy becomes obsessed with meeting her. His friends Buddy (Charles Grodin), Joe (Joseph Bologna) and Michael (Michael Huddleston) encourage him by sharing their own extra-marital advice and experiences. The inept Teddy decides to find Charlotte but manages to make a date with the wrong woman, Ms. Milner (Gilda Radner). Teddy continues his quest and finally does meet Charlotte, but with unexpected consequences. Star Gene Wilder also wrote and directed this silly but satisfying romp of romantic obsession. The theme song, "I Just Called to Say I Love You," by musician Stevie Wonder won an Academy Award for Best Song.moreless

And so it goes, cleverly, amiably -- infidelity made fun. Wilder seems to have a firm hand on the controls, and the movie works best when he indulges his talent for physical comedy...

Much less painful than a walk in the summer heat, but not quite as pleasant as a swim in a cool pool. [15 Aug 1984]

Menopausal male Wilder gets the frustrated hots for comely Ms Le Brock in this broad, unfunny Hollywood remake of the broad, only vaguely funny French original Pardon Mon Affaire (...
