The Wrong Box is a 1966 British comedy with an all-star cast, loosely based on the cult Victorian novel by Robert Louis Stevenson and his stepson. The plot concerns a tontine scheme established in early 19th-century England - each one of a group of twenty children has £1000 invested in his name, and the total sum grows at compound interest over decades, continuing to do so until only one of the children is left alive to inherit the whole, now very large, sum. Estranged brothers Joseph and Masterman, both declining in health, are the last ones left -  which old man will die first? When a bizarre mishap leads to confusion all around as to who is and is not still alive, a morbid series of events takes place among the surviving family members as they vie to inherit the fortune.
