Once out on his own, he becomes a cowboy who is in search of his own fortune. He uses his dancehall girlfriend, Callie (Lee Remick), to get the money he needs to pay for a ranch. Once he has his ranch and new fortune, Lat moves on to his next girlfriend Joyce (Patricia Owens), the banker's daughter. Using his new-found connections Lat runs for office and soon finds himself in the position of being a part of a group who is after his best friend Tom Ping (Stuart Whitman). Tom Ping is accused of cattle-rustling. Lat suddenly finds himself faced with the difficult dilemma to either side with the angry mob or his best friend.
