They Died With Their Boots On is a 1941 drama depicting the life of General George Armstrong Custer (Errol Flynn). Directed by Raoul Walsh, the film begins with Custer's entry into West Point in 1857. Custer is a tough but undisciplined soldier who stands up to Ned Sharp (Arthur Kennedy), the Academy's senior cadet. While attending the Academy, Custer meets his future wife, Elizabeth Bacon (Olivia de Havilland). By chance, he also meets General Winfield Scott (Sydney Greenstreet) who gets him assigned to the cavalry. He serves with distinction during the Civil War, but finds himself with little to do after the war ends. Elizabeth, manages to persuade General Scott to have him appointed to Lieutenant Colonel where his assigned command of the 7th Cavalry. Portrayed as a defender of the Indians in the film, Custer heads off to South Dakota where his former West Point nemesis, Ned Sharp, is stirring up the Indians for his own profit. Custer and his men face their final battle on June 25, 1876.
