They Live is a 1988 science fiction/horror film directed by legendary master of horror John Carpenter. It is an adaptation of the 1963 short story "Eight O'Clock in the Morning" by Ray Nelson. Nada (Roddy Piper), a drifter who has found temporary work in Los Angeles, witnesses police kill the minister of a church and destroy a shantytown that is next to it. Spurred by curiosity, Nada goes inside the now abandoned church and finds a strange box filled with sunglasses. When he puts them on, he discovers that some people are actually aliens who are pretending to be upper-class humans and police officers. He can also see hidden subliminal messages in advertisements that are encouraging humans to obey alien authority. Nada is desperate to let other people know the truth about the aliens, so he forces a friend from work, Frank Armitage (Keith David), to wear the glasses. Together, Nada and Frank concoct a dangerous plan to destroy the alien mind control and expose the creatures for what they really are.moreless
