They Rode West is a 1954 western directed by Phil Karlson. The film follows Dr. Allen Seward (Robert Francis) who takes up his job as the new doctor of a outlying cavalry post. Almost immediately, Seward gets in trouble with the post commander, Captain Peter Blake (Phil Carey), after treating nearby Kiowa Indians for malaria against orders. Blake's belief is that the only good Indian is a dead Indian. When the Kiowa leave the reservation after being cured of malaria, they join up with Comanche Indians and attack the post. Seward is condemned as a "woodhawk," a bird that attacks its own. With Captain Blake against him, Seward teams-up with Blake's niece, Laurie MacKaye (Donna Reed), and Manyi-ten (May Wynn), a white girl kidnapped by the Comanche who is now married to the chief's son. Together the trio must work to end the war and save the cavalry from almost certain annihilation. Fans of director Phil Karlson will enjoy this well-written western, one of his last before his life ended prematurely in a plane crash.moreless
