13 Conversations About One Thing is a drama that intertwines the stories of five very different people all contemplating one thing: happiness. Troy (Matthew McConaughey) is a successful public defender who is guilt-stricken after committing a hit-and-run. The accident severely injures Beatrice (Clea DuVall), a house-cleaner who, during her recovery, starts questioning her faith in a higher power. Troy, meanwhile, sells his car to Walker (John Turturro), a university physics professor. Walker is experiencing a typical midlife crisis and tries to understand his unhappiness in a scientific analysis of cause and effect, leading him to run out on his wife, Patricia (Amy Irving). Troy also touches the life of Gene (Alan Arkin) while the two are out drinking. Gene is a disgruntled insurance manager who takes pleasure in ruining the life of his more cheerful co-workers. As their stories unfold, each character makes choices but fails to predict the outcomes. The consequences, however, are what tie these supposed strangers together.
