This Happy Breed is a 1944 British drama based on the Noel Coward play of the same title. The film follows the triumphs and tragedies of a working-class British family as they adjust to what proves to be a fleeting time of peace after World War I. Husband and father Frank Gibbons (Robert Newton) takes a job as a travel agent and, with his wife Ethel (Celia Johnson), buys a house next door to fellow veteran Bob Mitchell (Stanley Holloway) in suburban South London. Frank's sister, Ethel's mother, and Frank and Ethel's three teenage children round out the crowded but happy household. The children quickly get caught up in the social changes sweeping across England; daughter Queenie (Kay Walsh) takes up dancing the Charleston while Reg (John Blythe) gets involved in the Socialist movement. However, when some family members make disastrous decisions -- and it also becomes clear that unrest is creeping across Europe -- the Gibbons realize their happiness may be short-lived.moreless
