This is England is a 2006 British film written and directed by Shane Meadows. Set in 1983, the Plot revolves around an unpopular 12-year-old named Shaun (Thomas Turgoose) who runs into a group of friendly skinheads one day after school. The head of the gang, who are completely non-violent and non-racist, is a older teenager named Woody (Joe Gilgun). Woody takes Shaun under his wing, and makes him feel a part of something. Everything is going fine until Combo (Stephen Graham) rejoins the group after a stint in prison. While in prisoner, Combo learned about white nationalism, and bought into it. Now the gang is torn, leave with Woody, or stay with Combo and fight for their “cause.” Loosely based on writer/director Shane Meadowns own life, This is England deals with the white nationalist’s adoption of the skin-head aesthetic, which itself borrowed heavily from ska, reggae, soul, and black culture in general.

With its knockout lead perfs and taut if slightly familiar construction, this '80s-set dramedy about a skinhead gang reps Meadows' most fluently made film so far.
