This World, Then The Fireworks is a 1997 crime drama directed by Michael Oblowitz and based on the book of the same name by Jim Thompson about investigative reporter Marty Lakewood (Billy Zane), who leaves his wife in Chicago to return to his small Californian hometown after discovering too much corruption in the Chicago Police Department. Lakewood is reunited with his ill mother (Rue McClanahan) and twin sister turned prostitute, Carol (Gina Gershon). Marty rekindles an incestuous affair that he had with his sister when they were younger and begins an affair with policewoman Lois Archer (Sheryl Lee). On the weekends, Archer begins inviting Marty to her beach cottage that she and her husband own so she can act out her secret fantasies of being abused. Soon after, Carol poisons a few gangsters who are attempting to muscle in on her prostitution, and Marty and Carol develop a devious plot to get Archer's cabin for themselves.
