Three Kings is the first big Hollywood movie about Operation Desert Storm. It is directed by David O. Russell (The Fighter)US Army Special Forces Major Archie Gates (George Clooney), Sergeant First Class Troy Barlow (Mark Wahlberg, who went on to star in The Fighter), Staff Sergeant Chief Elgin (Ice Cube), and Private First Class Conrad Vig (Spike Jonze, before his successful directing career) become aware of a huge trove of gold in Iraq. Of course, they decide to steal it. Major Gates, using his Special Forces training and experience, is creative in the way they pursue the loot. They are able to steal the gold without shooting anyone. The soldiers decide to help the Iraqis around them. Three Kings was famous for its controversial shooting method, which turned out to be very realistic special effects. This movie provides both a comical and critical look at American operations in Iraq during the first Desert Storm campaign.

Metacritic Score

  • 90

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

Off-and-on cynical and sentimental, Russell's darkly comic tale shows how much can be done with familiar material when you're burning to do things differently and have the gifts to...

  • 70

    Variety Todd McCarthy

An impudently comic, stylistically aggressive and, finally, very thoughtful manner.

  • 40

    The New York Times

It isn't nearly as successful a showcase for this filmmaker's extraordinary talents.
