Thunderhead: Son of Flicka is the 1945 follow-up to the popular 1943 drama My Friend Flicka, about Ken (Roddy McDowall), a rancher's son who nurses and tames a wild young filly. In this film, beloved Flicka has grown into a mare. When she mysteriously disappears one day, Ken and his family are concerned but the reason becomes clear soon enough: she has gone off and given birth to a colt. Ken thinks the father is a neighboring racing horse and decides to train the newly dubbed Thunderhead for racing. Ken finds this horse even harder to train than his headstrong mother, however, but Thunderhead does show blazing speed. Meanwhile, a wild albino horse is terrorizing the local ranchers, stealing their mares and killing the stallions. Can Ken tame Thunderhead enough to win the upcoming county handicap? What will the ranchers do about this deadly albino horse? Thunderhead: Son of Flicka is based on a novel by Mary O'Hara.
