Tim is a 1979 Australian drama about an unconventional love story. Mentally challenged 24-year-old Tim (Mel Gibson) works as a laborer for a building contractor, where the other construction workers relentlessly tease him. Mary Horton (Piper Laurie), a middle-aged American, hires Tim to do some work around her beach cottage. What begins as one weekend's worth of work develops into a regular job. At the same time, their friendship develops from polite exchanges to a genuine connection. In spite of the differences in their ages and mental capacities, they both have been shunned by the world around them and share a rare sense of belonging with one another. When Tim's mother passes away, the relationship deepens into a romantic attachment. Several neighbors as well as Tim's sister, Dawn (Deborah Kennedy), become critical of the pair, concerned that Mary is taking advantage of Tim's innocence. Yet, Ron (Alwyn Kurts), Tim's father, believes that the feelings are both mutual and beneficial to both of the lovers.moreless
