Timeline, based on the novel written by Michael Crichton, takes place both in the present and in the past. An archaeologist, Professor Edward Johnston (Billy Connolly), and his team of students and aides, are sponsored by a corporation, ITC (International Technology Corporation), to excavate the ruins of the village of Castlegard in France near La Roque Castle. During the dig, Professor Johnston becomes suspicious of the information given by ITC and its president, Robert Doniger (David Thewelis). As the professor flies back to New Mexico to investigate ITC, his students continue with the excavation and soon discover a sealed chamber with a 600-year old parchment from the professor and his bifocal lens, which could not have existed during that era. When the team contacts ITC to figure out what happened, Doniger explains to them that the company had invented a machine that could be used for teleportation. However, a wormhole was inadvertently opened up in 1357 at Castlegard, effectively creating a time travel device. Professor Johnston took the opportunity to travel back in time, but got stuck in the past. Now, it's up to his students to go back in time and rescue him from becoming history!
