To Be or Not To Be is a comedy about a group of theater actors who battle against the Nazis following the invasion of Poland in 1939. Frederick Bronski (Mel Brooks) is an egotistical actor who becomes aware that his wife, Anna Bronski (Anne Bancroft) is having an affair with a Polish pilot named Lieutenant Andrei Sobinski (Tim Matheson). Every night, Anna and Andrei meet backstage when Frederick begins performing Hamlet's famous soliloquy that begins "to be or not to be." Things take a dramatic turn, however, when the Nazis march into Warsaw, forcing the theater troupe into hiding. As part of the Resistance, Sobinski is forced to leave Poland when the Nazis arrive. While in England, he enlists the aid of Professor Seletzky (Jose Ferrer) and asks him to deliver a message to Anna. What he doesn't realize is that Seletzky is a Nazi spy who works for Colonel Ehrhardt (Charles Durning), the man in charge of the Nazi's Warsaw contingent. Will the actors be caught by the Nazis or will they be able to outwit them by using their theatrical talents?moreless
