To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday is a 1996 film about a man, Richard (Peter Gallagher) who has lost his wife (Michelle Pfeiffer) to drowning. Traumatized by her death, Richard continues to live in the past and associate with her ghost. His family life with his daughter (Claire Danes) starts to deteriorate because of his obsession with his dead wife. Over Labor Day weekend, Richard invites Gillian's sister, Esther (Kathy Baker), and her husband, Paul (Bruce Altman), to his Nantucket home to celebrate Gillian's birthday. Along with them comes a beautiful young woman, Kevin (Wendy Crewson), meant to distract Richard from his dead wife. This fails, but Kevin does attract attention from Paul, who makes a pass at her. Family tensions run high and Richard must come to face his emotional detachment from his daughter due to his obsession, while his sister-in-law and her husband reexamine their relationship, and compare it to David's everlasting love for his wife.
