To Kill a King is a 2003 British historical drama directed by Mike Barker. The film is set in 1645, just as King Charles I (Rupert Everett) has been dethroned in the English Civil War. The story focuses on the relationship between Parliamentarians Lord General Thomas Fairfax (Dougray Scott) and his deputy and close friend Oliver Cromwell (Tim Roth) as they attempt to restore the battered British empire to its former glory. Cromwell's vision for England involves reform, and the future Lord Protector pushes hard for his vision while Fairfax campaigns for reason. The relationship between the two is further tested when Cromwell suspects Fairfax's wife, Lady Anne Fairfax (Olivia Williams), of sympathizing with the imprisoned King Charles I. Cromwell's increasing fanaticism drive the wedge deeper, widening the divide. As Parliament falls around them, and the King is executed, the former allies find themselves on opposite sides of the battle. To Kill a King features truly excellent performances from lead actors Tim Roth and Dougray Scott.moreless
