To Sir, With Love stars Sidney Poitier as young black engineer who takes a teaching job in the East End of London in 1967. Mark Thackeray (Sidney Poitier) cannot find work in his chosen field so he settles for what he hopes will be a brief tenure as a high school teacher in an undisciplined, working-class neighborhood. Thackeray's unusual approach of demanding respectful behavior and classroom discipline first inspires mocking and taunting from these students. The rough neighborhood has made the kids brutal with one another but under Thackeray's dignified approach begins to win them over. His humor and genuine concern for their well-being leads to his involvement in their personal lives. Then Thackeray receives the engineering job offer he had been waiting for and must decide whether to follow his dreams or continue his work with the students. This charming drama about an influential teacher with underclass students has inspired many similar tales like "Dangerous Minds" and "Stand and Deliver."
