Tokyo Story is 1953 black-and-white Japanese drama about alienation and reconciliation from director Yasujir'' Ozu. Tomi Hirayama (Chieko Higashiyama) and Shukishi Hirayama (Chish'' Ry'') are a retired couple living in a rural Japanese village. One day they decide to travel to bustling post World War II Tokyo to visit their adult children who are now married. Unfortunately, when they arrive in Tokyo they discover that their adult children are busy living their own modern lives and have no time or room for them. The couple are sent to stay in a health spa for a while and then return home disillusioned. Upon their return, Tomi falls ill. When the adult children hear the news they are grief-stricken and hurry to be by their mother's side, but is it too late for a reconciliation? The screen writer, Kogo Noda, based the movie's story on his recollections of "Make Way for Tomorrow," a 1937 film from director Leo McCarey.
