Tokyo! offers three filmmakers the opportunity to give their view of eccentrics living in one of the most cramped and futuristic city on earth. The triptych begins with Michel Gondrey's "Interior Design" short film following Akira (Ryo Kase) and his insecure girlfriend Hiroko (Ayako Fujitani) as they scour Tokyo's low-end real estate market for an affordable apartment that offers all the comforts of home, such as plumbing. French filmmaker L''os Carax follows a half-human creature that pops up from a manhole and begins causing havoc on the streets of the city. The creature from the sewers (Denis Lavant) offers a spoof of the culture's Kaiju films, such as Godzilla, as well as a social commentary on the culture's forgetting of wrongs committed in the past. Bong Joon-ho, a Sourth Korean director, brings the final installment of the film using a shut-in (Teruyuki Kagawa) who has lived for more than a decade with little human contact. His isolated existence is disturbed by an earthquake that shakes him from his home out into the city streets.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 70

The New York Times Stephen Holden

Both in its parts and in the sum of them Tokyo! is playfully and sometimes disorientingly apocalyptic.

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times

A fun jaunt around the city and a quick tour of the preoccupations of three leading directors? Now there's a bargain.

  • 60

    Variety Justin Chang

An uneven but enjoyable trio of films that take affectionate (and sometimes literal) aim at the Japanese capital.
