Tol'able David is a 1921 silent drama directed by Henry King. David (Richard Barthelmess) is the youngest son of a sharecropping family living in the small town of Greenstream in West Virginia. David is known to be immature however, he is forced to grow up when a new family, Iscah (Walter P. Lewis) and his two sons, Luke (Ernest Torrence) and Saul (Ralph Yearsley), move into town and begin terrorizing the community. One of the new arrivals throws a boulder at the local mailman who is David's brother, Allen (Warner Richmond), the large rock strikes Allen's head and leaves him crippled. Following the attack, David and his father, Hunter (Edmund Gurney), argue about getting revenge however, the stress causes Hunter to have a fatal heart attack. David then finds himself in a position where he has to support his family, take over Allen's job as the local mailman and protect his town from three thugs.
