Toll Gate is a 1920 Western film written and directed by Lambert Hillyer that tells the story of relentless gunman, Black Deering (William S. Hart), and his gang of fearless outlaws. Deering plans to abandon the criminal life and settle for something more peaceful, but the other gang members convince him to ride just for one more job. It is an opportunity for his partner, Tom Jordan (Joseph Singleton), to betray the gang for a considerable reward. As a result, Deering is caught by the authorities, but manages to escape and to find shelter in the cabin of lonely woman, Mary Brown (Anna Q. Nilson) and her young child. This is where he finds the strength to quit his dirty and sinful occupation and start a normal life together with his hosts. As it turns out it is not so easy to abandon the old ways and forget the shameful betrayal of his former partner Jordan. Deering is caught in the middle between his thoughts of a peaceful life and the strong desire for revenge.moreless
