1994
Rating:
PG-13
Tom & Viv is a dramatic 1994 film that centers around the highly dysfunctional and brief marriage between esteemed author T. S. Eliot and his wife Vivienne Haigh-Wood. The film stars Willem Dafoe (Platoon, Shadow of the Vampire, Boondock Saints, Spider-Man) and Miranda Richardson (The Hours, Sleepy Hollow, The Crying Game). Director Brian Gilbert adapted the script from a play written by Michael Hastings in 1984. The film follows T. S. Eliot, "Tom" (Dafoe), and Vivienne (Richardson) from the beginning of their budding relationship through their most trying times. T. S. Eliot tries desperately to assume a debonair, British demeanor and never quite nails it. He is infatuated by a somewhat carefree Vivienne who is exuberant and vivacious in nature. But there is a darker side to Vivienne - she battles against strong hormonal imbalances which often jeopardize their otherwise coordinated relationship. Miranda Richardson's performance makes this movie worth watching. She is so convincingly ill, she won an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Tom & Viv also stars Rosemary Harris, who received an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.moreless
