Tom Sawyer is a musical adaptation of the classic Mark Twain novel. Tom Sawyer (Johnny Whitaker) is an adventurous young lad growing up during the pre-Civil War period. Tom is raised by his stern Aunt Polly (Celeste Holm) on the banks of the Mississippi River in Hannibal, Missouri. Tom is joined in his antics by his best friend Huckleberry Finn (Jeff East) and his girl-next-door sweetheart Becky Thatcher (Jodie Foster). Tom's spirit of adventure often leads him into trouble, be it for fibbing during school or convincing his schoolmates to join him in a treasure hunt. Life is carefree for the fun-loving Tom until he and Huck inadvertently witness the murder of Doc Robinson (Richard Eastham). Town drunk Muff Potter (Warren Oates) is blamed for the crime but Tom and Huck know that he is innocent. Now the boys must decide if they are willing to risk their own lives in order to save an innocent man. Don Taylor directed this Oscar-nominated 1973 family friendly musical.moreless
