Tony Manero is a 2008 Chilean drama directed by Pablo Larrain. The action takes place in 1978 Chile dominated by the cruel dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. It tells the story of Raul Peralta (Alfredo Castro), a criminal and opposition fighter, who is passionately impersonating Tony Manero, the character played by John Travolta from Saturday Night Fever. Each weekend, Raul and his friends transform small bars outside of Santiago into dance rings. Raul's obsession of becoming a superstar is suddenly more real than ever when the national television announces a contest for Tony Manero imitators. He is driven by the desire of creating a unique disco dancing routine. Unfortunately, his path towards glory is overshadowed by a series of crimes and thefts that Raul commits and by the secret police persecution of his friends, Cony (Amparo Noguera) and H''ctor Morales (Goyo), who fight against the Pinochet regime. This intense drama has six film awards and one nomination and was the Chile's submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.moreless
