Tootsie, a 1982 comedy, stars Dustin Hoffman as a struggling actor who takes extreme measures to salvage his career. Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman) is devoted to his craft, but his reputation for perfectionism makes it nearly impossible for him to find work. After his girlfriend, Sandy Lester (Teri Garr), loses a soap-opera audition, Michael dresses as a woman, calls himself "Dorothy Michaels" and wins the part. When Dorothy Michaels becomes a national sensation, Michael must take precautions to hide his double life from Sandy. Even worse, Michael finds himself attracted to his co-star, Julie Nichols (Jessica Lange), and wonders how to tell Julie, who knows him only as Dorothy, about his feelings. At the same time, his male co-star John Van Horn (George Gaynes) begins to romantically pursue Dorothy. When the network offers to renew Michael's contract, he must decide whether he can afford to reveal his true identity, even as he finds it more and more difficult to keep up his deception.

Metacritic Score

  • 100

    Variety Todd McCarthy

Remarkably funny and entirely convincing, film pulls off the rare accomplishment of being an in-drag comedy which also emerges with three-dimensional characters.

This movie gets you coming and going.

Rather than confront what it sets up, it takes the one joke and runs - till it runs out of steam.
