Topkapi is a light hearted action comedy about the heist of a valuable jewel encrusted dagger in Turkey. Nestled deep in the most guarded room of the most guarded museum in Istanbul, in a glass case, lies a dagger adorned with the most beautiful and valuable jewels in the world; it is a prize notorious jewel thief Elizabeth Lipp (Melina Mercouri) must get her hands on. For this job, she enlists former lover Walter Harper (Maximilian Schell), a mastermind known for drawing up the most intricate and ingenious plans, to concoct the perfect scheme. At his suggestion, Lipp hires a gang of locals to pull of the job, most notably Arthur Simpson (Peter Ustinov), a perennially small change con man. But when Simpson is stopped at the border with load of guns he did not know he had, he is forced to spy on the crooks for the Turkish security team, revealing everything he hears, no matter how meaningless or insignificant it is. With their thrown together crew of well trained buffoons, Lipp and Harper launch into their plan to steal the valuable dagger, with no idea what awaits them. Jules Dassin, famed director of the famous heist movie Rififi, spoofs his own classic film in this fun caper that served to inspire the famous Mission Impossible television series and win Ustinov a best supporting actor Oscar.moreless
