Tora! Tora! Tora! is an emphatic telling of the different points of view, both American and Japanese, before the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December of 1941. The main character for the Japanese perspective is the newly appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Fleet, Admiral Isoroku Yamamato (So Yamamura). He is one the few voices of reason in the Japanese brass and wishes to avoid a ire-provoking attack against the massive United States military. The Japanese warhawks prevail and Yamamoto carries out his orders. The resulting chaos eventually leads to the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The American perspective features Admiral Husband E. Kimmel (Martin Balsam) who is in charge of the naval fleet at Pearl Harbor. American intelligence has intercepted some of the Japanese radio communications and Kimmel is worried about an imminent attack. The top American brass dismiss his claims and can be seen leisurely going about their routines the morning of December 7, 1941. Tora! Tora! Tora! is a thoughtful and fair rendering of both sides of perhaps the most devastating surprise attacks in military history.
