Total Recall is a film about memory, identity, and sabotage. Doug Quaid is a mild-mannered construction worker who lives on Earth but dreams of visiting a recently colonized Mars. Quaid goes to a company called Rekall to have memories of a virtual vacation to the red planet installed in his mind. Once he enters the Rekall machine, however, the technicians make a disconcerting discovery: Quaid's mind has been previously wiped. At this point, Quaid awakens and claims that the technicians have blown his cover as a secret agent and proceeds to kill several of them. Panicking, Rekall aborts the procedure, removes his memories of visiting their company, and sends him home. When Quaid comes to, he discovers that his whole reality has shifted. His wife Lori tries to kill him, and he only barely escapes. From there, it's a fast-paced thrill ride as Quaid learns of his status as a rebel leader, outruns the men sent to kill him, and tries to bring freedom to the government-oppressed people of Mars.

Metacritic Score

  • 88

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

One of the most complex and visually interesting science fiction movies in a long time.

  • 80

    Variety

The fierce and unrelenting pace, accompanied by a tongue-in-cheek strain of humor in the roughhouse screenplay, keeps the film moving like a juggernaut.

  • 50

The New York Times Elvis Mitchell

Mr. Verhoeven is much better at drumming up this sort of artificial excitement than he is at knowing when to stop.
