Movie Summary

John Lasseter

Toy Story 2 is a 1999 animated family comedy following the much beloved original Toy Story movie, in which Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), and the rest of Andy's (John Morris) toys get their start on the big screen. In this sequel, Woody wants to go to cowboy camp with Andy, but when his arm rips he has to stay on the shelf at home. On the shelf he meets a broken penguin squeeze toy, Wheezy (Joe Ranft), only to find out soon later that Wheezy is going to be sold at a yard sale! Woody cannot let that happen to his new friend, so he enlists the help of Andy's dog, Buster, to sneak out and rescue Wheezy. Once he is outside, though, he is noticed by the enthusiastic toy collector, Al McWhiggin (Wayne Knight) who wants to sell Woody at his store, Al's Toy Barn. Now it is up to Buzz Lightyear, Rex (Wallace Shawn), Mr. Potato Head (Don Reckles), Slinky Dog (Jim Varney), and Hamm (John Ratzenberger) to save Woody before someone else buys him. Toy Story 2 received great acclaim, earning a 2000 Oscar nomination, as well as many other nominations and wins from such renowned award organizations as the Annie Awards, the Grammy Awards, the Teen Choice Awards, the Golden Reel Awards, etc.

Metacritic Score

  • 100

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

Toy Story 2 may not have the most original title, but everything else about it is, well, mint in the box.

  • 90

    The New York Times

Making sure that computer-generated animation will never be the same.

  • 90

    Variety Todd McCarthy

Toy Story 2 is to "Toy Story" what "The Empire Strikes Back" was to its predecessor, a richer, more satisfying film in every respect.
