Trail of the Pink Panther, the seventh installment of the Pink Panther series, centers around another theft of the Pink Panther diamond from Lugash. The authorities call in Chief Inspector Clouseau (Peter Sellers) to investigate the theft. During his flight to Lugash from London, his plane disappears. Famous French TV reporter, Mary Jouvet (Joanna Lumley), investigates the disappearance of Inspector Clouseau and questions anyone connected to him, including Dreyfus (Herbert Lom), Sir Charles (David Niven), Lady Lytton (Capucine), Hercule Lajoie (Graham Stark), and Cato Fong (Burt Kwouk). All of the interviewees tell of their experiences with Clouseau. Jouvet is then kidnapped by mobster, Bruno Langlois (Robert Loggia), who does not want the Inspector to be found. Jouvet continues on to find Inspector Clouseau's father (Richard Mulligan). Will Clouseau be found? Follow Jouvet as she discovers the background of the Chief Inspector with famous clips and never-before-seen clips from past movies.

As a whole the film was funny, but the lack of a living lead, led Trail to being more about the editing than the story.
