Trekkies is a vastly entertaining 1997 documentary about the strange-but-true fans of "Star Trek." The 1960s Gene Roddenberry series may have only lasted three seasons, but the phenomenon continues to this day in a multibillion dollar franchise of spinoffs, merchandise and remakes. How has it captured and maintained such rabid fans? Director Roger Nygard takes an affectionate tour of the Star Trek galaxy, from fans who dress like Spock to Leonard Nimoy himself. The film delights along with the fervent followers and bemused cast members and tries to answer how this show has maintained such a hold over the American imagination. Of course, there is no single answer, but the journey is fascinating, funny, and sometimes downright ridiculous. Former "Star Trek: The Next Generation actress Denise Crosby makes a splendid host for the complete Trek experience. The filmmakers enjoyed such critical and popular success with this film, they returned to the subject with an international focus in "Trekkies 2" (2004).
