True Colors is a 1991 drama about a friendship destroyed through ambition, greed, and politics starring John Cusack ("High Fidelity") and James Spader (Boston Legal). First year law students Peter Burton (John Cusack) and Tim Gerrity (James Spader) meet on the first day of classes and forge a close friendship in spite of their differences. The idealistic Tim comes from a wealthy, well-connected family, whereas Peter has pulled himself up from the working class by any means necessary. Tim becomes engaged to Diana (Imogen Stubbs), the daughter of a Senator James Stiles (Richard Widmark). At a Christmas party at the Senator's home, Peter manages to seduce Diana and score a promising job with Stiles' office. After Peter confesses the infidelity, the friendship manages to survive. Years later, when Peter develops a connection to a mafia-connected real estate developer John Palmeri (Mandy Patinkin), Tim may finally be ready to face the dark side of his oldest friend. Director Herbert Ross (Steel Magnolias) balances the emotional and political intrigues of these two political friends.
