Movie Summary

Director:
Hal Hartley
Released:
1990
Rating:
R
Trust is the story of Maria (Adrienne Shelly), a teenager from Long Island, who is having the day from hell. As Maria admits to her father that she is pregnant, he goes off in a rage and drops dead on the spot of a heart-attack. Her mother (Edie Falco) holds her responsible for his death and kicks her out of the house while telling her she will never forgive her for killing him. To compound matters for Maria as she tells her boyfriend that she is pregnant he dumps her, running off to football practice. As Maria finds herself alone and homeless she stumbles upon Mathew (Martin Donovan) a grenade wielding electronics whiz who offers to help her sort things out. This quirky and achingly honest film by Hal Hartley teams up two misfits in a strange story of love, hope and redemption, where the two of them find they can help each other more then they ever thought possible.

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    The New York Times

Though Mr. Hartley's films are richly detailed, there are no frills or grace notes. Such work risks being too blunt, but Trust comes through.

  • 70

    Variety

Long Island filmaker Hal Hartley progresses from his debut feature, The Unbelievable Truth to this bleak, off-center comedy about dysfunctional families in working class suburbia.

  • 50

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

Hal Hartley is on his way to creating a distinctive film world, and although Trust is not a successful film, you can see his vision at work, and it's intriguing.
