Turn of the Tide is a British romantic drama film released in 1935. Based on the novel by Leo Walmsley, this film tells the story of young lovers Ruth Fosdyck (Geraldine Fitzgerald) and Marney Lunn (John Garrick). Ruth and Marney come from warring families that are embroiled with one another in a vicious turf battle over fishing rights. For centuries, the Fosdyck clan has controlled all fishing ventures in the town and they are not about to let the Lunns encroach upon their territory without a serious fight. Turn of the Tide is a favorite among fans of early British cinema, and is particularly renowned for its attention to minute details and faithfulness to its source material. The costumes seen in the film are authentic fishing "ganseys," or woven jerseys, bearing unique patterns used to identify corpses lost at sea. Hailed as a subtle and thoughtful film, Turn of the Tide holds an important place in the canon of early British cinema.moreless
