Turned Out: Sexual Assault Behind Bars, a feature-length documentary narrated by Danny Trejo, explores the American prison system and the regular occurrence of sexual assault. Directed by Jonathan Schwartz, the 2004 film most carefully details the story of Mindy, a young white male who has undergone regular sexual assault. With intimate interviews of four other prisoners in the Alabama state penitentiary system, the filmmakers spend time getting to know the prison and it's inmates in hopes of establishing trust. Within the prison system, many inmates are forced to offer their bodies in exchange for coffee, chips, or various other goods. When sex becomes currency, the occurrence of rape is alarming; one in five prison inmates have been sexually assaulted at one time or another. Turned Out researches and informs the viewer of the damaging effects these experiences can have on prisoners. With the recent passing of laws against filming in prisons, this film is one of the last to paint an intimate portrait of life in prison.moreless
